OhioLearns is the one-stop site for anyone interested in college-level distance or e-learning in Ohio. OhioLearns is a searchable catalog that includes courses as well as degrees and certificates from Ohio’s two- and four-year, public and private, higher education institutions.

History of OhioLearns

The OhioLearns catalog was started in 1999 when distance learning was a new and emerging concept in Ohio. That catalog has grown since then and now consists of more than 500 degrees and certificates as well as more than 3,000 courses offered this spring semester, with more being added continuously. The catalog has a long history of connecting Ohioans with educational opportunities to fit their busy schedules and lifestyles.

If you are interested in furthering your education, changing careers or moving ahead in your current position by taking a distance learning course or enrolling in a distance-learning degree or certificate program, going to the OhioLearns website is a good place to start.

Online readiness

Most distance learning courses are offered online through web-based learning management systems. Before you start looking for an OhioLearns course or degree program, it might be a good idea to see if you are ready for online learning. Online learning isn’t a good fit for everyone. Highly motivated individuals who can set goals and meet them independently tend to be successful candidates for online learning.

Here are two resources you could use to determine whether you are ready for online learning.

  1. UNC online readiness assessment
  2. OASIS online study skills assessment

Once you have determined that online learning might be a good method of delivery for you, you can use the OhioLearns catalog to find a course or degree program to fit your needs.

Searching for courses in OhioLearns

  1. Go to the eStudent Services course catalog.
  2. If you are interested in a specific subject or institution, use the filters to narrow down your choices. It is important to be as specific as possible when setting your filters to avoid an overwhelming list of possibilities.
  3. One of the most important filters to set is Course starts between these dates.  If you are looking for a class for the summer of 2016, set the first filter at May 1, 2016 and the second filter at the next three months. If you are looking for a class for fall semester of 2016, set the first filter at August 1, 2016 and the next filter as the next six months.
  4. Once your list of courses comes up, take a look through all of the information and move on to visiting each institution’s individual website and contacting the institutions to get more information.

Searching for degrees in OhioLearns

  1. Go to the eStudent Services degree catalog.
  2. If you are interested in a specific subject or institution, use the filters to narrow down your choices.
  3. The degree type is one filter that is important to use to limit your search. Do some research to determine if you need a certificate, a two-year degree or a four-year degree.
  4. If it is important that the degree is 100 percent at a distance, be sure that you set that filter as well. This does not mean that you will never have to attend campus, but only for such things as orientation and testing, not for the coursework.
  5. Once your list of degrees comes up, read through them and see which ones you would like to pursue further. Most of them have webpages for more information or a contact listed on the OhioLearns degree page associated with that degree.

Good luck with your search! We hope it leads you to opportunities and new beginnings! Please let us know if you have questions: ohiolearns@oh-tech.org.
